The Summerville Police
Department’s Training Division is responsible for scheduling, conducting,
recording, tracking and reporting: basic, advanced and in-service level
training for all of the Department’s sworn and civilian employees. The
Training Division is recognized as an
"Official" ASHI (American Safety & Health Institute)
Training Center". |

Lt. James Bateman
joined the department in 1989 as a Reserve
Officer and became a full time employee in May
of 1991. He became the Summerville Police
Department's Training Officer in October 2005.
Prior to joining the Summerville Police
Department he served as a Paramedic and as a
Fixed Wing Flight Medic. He holds a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Criminal Justice and is a
Lifetime Member of the National Scholars Honor
Society. Lt Bateman is certified by the SC
Criminal Justice Academy as a Specific Skills
and Basic Instructor, Radar Instructor, Radar
Instructor Trainer, Field Training Officer (FTO)
and as a FTO Manager (Trainer). In October 2006
he was certified by the Federal Bureau of
Investigation as a Basic and NCIC Instructor and
by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
in Glynco, GA as a "STAR" (Small Town and Rural)
Domestic Violence Instructor. Lt Bateman serves
as an Adjunct Instructor for FLETC.
Summerville Police Department's Training Division is
committed to seeking out and providing training that
best suits the needs of the department and the career
development goals of the employees, while assuring all
officers obtain more than the required amount of
re-certification in-service hours.
From January
1, 2006 through
December 31, 2006 the Training Division
provided 140 employees (Officers,
Dispatchers, Civilians and Reserves) 212
classes on 118
topics for a total of 8,637
hours of Basic, Advanced and
In-Service Levels
of training.
From January
1, 2007 through
December 31, 2007 the Training Division has
provided 166
employees (Officers, Dispatchers,
Civilians and Reserves) 315
classes on 168
topics for a total of 12,087
hours of Basic, Advanced
and In-Service Levels
of training.
From January
1, 2008 through June
30, 2008
the Training Division has provided 138
employees (Officers, Dispatchers,
Civilians and Reserves) 75
classes on 58
topics for a total of 4,767
hours of Basic, Advanced
and In-Service Levels
of training.
