Cpl. Chip Holmes

The Summerville Police Department congratulates Cpl. Chip Holmes on his retirement. Cpl. Holmes began his law enforcement career as a Police Reserve Officer with the Summerville Police Department in 1996 while he was still serving in the United States Army.  Cpl. Holmes is a combat veteran of the Desert Storm War and obtained the rank of Sergeant First Class before retiring from the US Army 2001. Cpl. Holmes served the department as a patrol officer, a K-9 handler and as a school resource officer. Thank you for your service.

"Cora"

 It is with great sadness and regret that today we announce the passing of one of our four legged team members “Cora”, who was handled by Lt. Doug Wright.  Almost 17 years old with about $3,000,000 in seized illegal narcotics and assets, two dozen criminal apprehensions and the location of 3 children or missing adults. You served your community and family well.

Sgt. Joe DiVentura

5/6/1940 - 10/9/2010

 

 

It is with great regret that Chief Bruce E. Owens announces the death of retired Sergeant Joe DiVentura.

  Joseph Louis DiVentura was born May 6th, 1940, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Henry and Agnes DeAntonio DiVentura.  Joe attended Altoona High School, having joined the United States Navy after graduation.  Joe was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a highly decorated Senior Non-Commissioned Officer.  Joe retired from the Navy after more than 26 years of service.  Joe began his second career after joining the Summerville Police Department.  During his tenure at Summerville Police Department, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.  He performed several assignments within the Department; Night/Day Shift Patrol Supervisor, Warrants Division Supervisor, Specific Skills Instructor and Reserve Officer Program facilitator for several years.  Joe retired from the Summerville Police Department after 15 years of devoted and loyal service.  Joe is survived by his daughter; Connie DiVentura White (Brian), 2 grandsons, Ronnie who attends University of South Carolina and Michael who attends middle school.  Joe was predeceased by his son, Joseph L. DiVentura Jr., who died while on active duty in the United States Army in an aircraft mishap in December of 1985.

The cadets had a fantastic week of competition in Richland County at the 2010 SCALE Competition. The following awards were received:

·         1st Place Emergency Vehicle Operation – Michael       Bateman

·         1st in High Risk Traffic Stop

·         1st Place in Incident report Writing – Michael Bateman

·         1st Place Male Physical Agility – BJ Nelson

·         2nd Place in Legals Knowledge – Jerrmy Garrett / Goins

·         3rd Place Emergency Vehicle Operation – BJ Nelson
