It is with great regret that Chief Bruce E. Owens announces the death of Captain Steve Ptak, Summerville Police Department's Investigation Division Commander after a lengthy battle with cancer.

  Captain Ptak served in Law Enforcement for 28 years, beginning with three years of service with the US Army Military Police from 1978 to 1981, to include service with the Drug Suppression Team. Captain Ptak served as an Investigator, and was promoted to Sergeant, in the US Air Force Security Police for 17 years, starting in 1981. Captain Ptak began his full-time employment with the Summerville Police Department in 1998 as a Patrolman on the night shift, and earned promotions to Corporal, Detective Corporal, Detective Sergeant, Detective Lieutenant, and Detective Captain as the   Commander of the Criminal Investigations and Narcotics Divisions of the Summerville Police Department.
