Lt. James Bateman
joined the department in 1989 as a Reserve
Officer and became a full time employee in May
of 1991. He became the Summerville Police
Department's Training Officer in October 2005.
Prior to joining the Summerville Police
Department he served as a Paramedic and as a
Fixed Wing Flight Medic. He holds a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Criminal Justice and is a
Lifetime Member of the National Scholars Honor
Society. Lt Bateman is certified by the SC
Criminal Justice Academy as a Specific Skills
and Basic Instructor, Radar Instructor, Radar
Instructor Trainer, Field Training Officer (FTO)
and as a FTO Manager (Trainer). In October 2006
he was certified by the Federal Bureau of
Investigation as a Basic and NCIC Instructor and
by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
in Glynco, GA as a "STAR" (Small Town and Rural)
Domestic Violence Instructor. Lt Bateman serves
as an Adjunct Instructor for FLETC.
Summerville Police Department's Training Division is
committed to seeking out and providing training that
best suits the needs of the department and the career
development goals of the employees, while assuring all
officers obtain more than the required amount of
re-certification in-service hours.

Basic, Advanced and In-Service Level Training is
provided or scheduled for Officers, Dispatchers, Victim
Advocates, Records Personnel and other Civilian
Employees.

2006: 141 students attended 219 Classes on
119 Topics totaling 8,656 Hours of
Training.
In
2007: 166 students attended 317 Classes on
169 Topics totaling 12,139 Hours of
Training.
In
2008: 174 students attended 203 Classes on
140 Topics totaling 10,092 Hours of
Training.
In
2009: 162 students attended 279 Classes on
157 Topics totaling 16,213 Hours of
Training.
In
2010: As of June 1st 145 students
attended 113 classes on 79 Topics totaling
5,634 hours. |
