SUMMARY FOR TRAFFIC COLLISIONS IN 2009

There were 1,484 Traffic Collisions investigated by the Summerville Police Department in the year 2009, a decrease of 148 collisions from 2008 (1,632), and 416 from 2007 (1900). This is lower than the levels we had in 2005 (1623) and 2004 (1629). There was 1 fatal collision resulting in 1 fatality, (4 for 2008, 1 for 2007, 5 for 2006) and 34 driving under the influence arrests were made during these investigations.

 

     Statistical Information:

 

Ø      363 injuries out of 4,240 occupants. Of those injured, 319 transported

Ø      $4,709,325 in property damage

Ø        16 operating uninsured vehicles

Ø      401 collisions occurred in intersections (151 driveways)

Ø      220 collisions occurred on wet roads

Ø      224 occurred on Monday

Ø      208 occurred on Tuesday

Ø      236 occurred on Wednesday

Ø      219 occurred on Thursday

Ø      291 occurred on Friday

Ø      197 occurred on Saturday

Ø      109 occurred on Sunday

Ø      314 occurred on US 17A  (234 north, 80 south)

Ø      318 occurred on private property

Ø      137 occurred on Trolley Rd

Ø      107 occurred on US 78 (65 west, 42 east)

Ø      108 occurred on Berlin G. Myers PKWY ( 15 near Bacons Bridge)

Ø      18 occurred on Carolina Ave (11 east, 7 west)

Ø       79 occurred on Bacons Bridge Rd (17 around Lee St, 49 near BGM PKY)

Ø        37 occurred on Cedar St (27 north, 10 south)

Ø        49 occurred on Central Ave

Ø        80 occurred on Dorchester Rd

Ø        11 occurred on Midland Pkwy

Ø        52 occurred on Ladson Rd

Ø          6 occurred on Gahagan Rd

Ø        14 occurred on Richardson Ave (13 west, 1 east)

Ø      755 occurred due to following too close/ inattention

Ø      276 occurred due to failure to yield right-of-way

Ø      176 occurred due to improper backing

Ø        63 occurred due to disregarding a traffic signal or stop sign

Ø        60 occurred due to improper lane change/usage

Ø        22 occurred due to improper turn

Ø        16 occurred due to too fast for conditions

Ø        13 occurred due to improper passing

Ø            Citations were issued in 747 of the 1,484 collisions investigated
