SUMMARY FOR TRAFFIC COLLISIONS IN  2008

There were 1,632 Traffic Collisions investigated by the Summerville Police Department in the year 2008, a decrease of 268 collisions from 2007 (1900). This matches the levels we had in 2005 (1623) and 2004 (1629). Taking out the Private Property collisions, we had a decrease in roadway collisions by 221. There were 4 fatal collisions resulting in 5 fatalities, (1 for 2007, 5 for 2006) and 40 driving under the influence arrests were made during these investigations.

 Statistical Information:

 

Ø      370 injuries out of 4,443 occupants. Of those injured, 291 transported

Ø      $5,047,630 in property damage

Ø        16 operating uninsured vehicles

Ø      448 collisions occurred in intersections (128 driveways)

Ø      254 collisions occurred on wet roads

Ø      209 occurred on Monday

Ø      214 occurred on Tuesday

Ø      248 occurred on Wednesday

Ø      240 occurred on Thursday

Ø      347 occurred on Friday

Ø      235 occurred on Saturday

Ø      139 occurred on Sunday

Ø      315 occurred on US 17A  (222361 north, 92 south)

Ø      388 occurred on private property

Ø      121 occurred on Trolley Rd

Ø      105 occurred on US 78 (54 west, 51 east)

Ø      108 occurred on Berlin G. Myers PKWY ( 18 near Bacons Bridge)

Ø        26 occurred on Carolina Ave (14 east, 12 west)

Ø        60 occurred on Bacons Bridge Rd (17 around Lee St, 69 near BGM PKY)

Ø        50 occurred on Cedar St (29 north, 21 south)

Ø        61 occurred on Central Ave

Ø        75 occurred on Dorchester Rd

Ø        18 occurred on Midland Pkwy

Ø        41 occurred on Ladson Rd

Ø        10 occurred on Gahagan Rd

Ø        22 occurred on Richardson Ave (19 west, 3 east)

Ø      709 occurred due to following too close/ inattention

Ø      297 occurred due to failure to yield right-of-way

Ø      236 occurred due to improper backing

Ø        65 occurred due to disregarding a traffic signal or stop sign

Ø        78 occurred due to improper lane change/usage

Ø        35 occurred due to improper turn

Ø        28 occurred due to too fast for conditions

Ø        12 occurred due to improper passing

Ø            Citations were issued in 740 of the 1,632 collisions investigated
